皇冠体育鈥檚 Community Inspires Me To Give Back, Says Volunteer Award Recipient

Jasmit De Saffel, Artsci鈥17, discovered the importance of volunteering and giving back to the community during her first few weeks at 皇冠体育鈥檚. She received an entrance scholarship and had an amazing time during Frosh Week.

鈥淚 knew a lot of the orientation leaders were volunteers. I saw that volunteerism was really big at 皇冠体育鈥檚. So I got involved with it and loved it,鈥 says Jasmit. 鈥淲hen you come here, the community is so great and welcoming and you want to be a part of that environment.鈥

Now she is getting something after giving back to 皇冠体育鈥檚 for the past three years. Jasmit is one of nine 皇冠体育鈥檚 volunteers to receive 2016 Ontario Volunteer Service Award.

The other 皇冠体育鈥檚 students/alumni who received Ontario Volunteer Service Awards are:

  • Nancy Scarth, Sc鈥49 (60 years of service)
  • Gerald Thomas, Meds鈥50 (60 years of service)
  • Ernest Jury, Sc鈥55, MBA鈥62 (25 years of service)
  • Alison Holt, Artsci鈥87 (10 years of service)
  • Margaret Little, MA鈥85 (10 years of service)
  • Elaine Wu, Artsci鈥98, MIR鈥00, Law鈥03 (10 years of service)
  • Emily Gwiazda, Artsci鈥16 (Youth Award)
  • Karlee Squires, Artsci鈥17 (Youth Award)

鈥淰olunteers play such a vital role at 皇冠体育鈥檚 鈥 whether it is serving on the Board of Trustees, organizing a class reunion at Homecoming, or hosting an alumni Branch event. Their dedication and tricolour pride help make this university great,鈥 says Sarah Indewey, 皇冠体育鈥檚 Manager of Volunteer Relations and Reunions.

Jasmit has volunteered with the Alma Mater Society, the 皇冠体育鈥檚 Student Alumni Association (QSAA), and is the former president of the 皇冠体育鈥檚 Indian Student Association.

鈥淚 never volunteered for the awards. I did it because at 皇冠体育鈥檚 you can鈥檛 help but be involved. 皇冠体育鈥檚 has given a lot to me and I wanted to give back. I don鈥檛 have the financial capacity to give money right now so I do it with volunteerism,鈥 says Jasmit, who is currently the QSAA president.

Ontario Volunteer Service Awards are organized by the Ontario Ministry of Citizenship and Immigration. This year more than 11,000 volunteers were recognized.
